NEW ORLEANS— The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) is hiring more than 100 lifeguards for the summer 2015 pool season. NORDC lifeguards are required to be at least 16 years old.
The base wage is $11.38 per hour for either a 20 or 30-hour work week. Lifeguards are on duty during pool hours, which include mornings, mid-day, evenings, weekends and holidays.
Lifeguard applications are available at the NORDC Milne Campus at 5420 Franklin Avenue, Treme Pool at 900 N. Villere Street, or on online at www.nola.gov/lifeguard.
The application deadline for the summer season is April 26, 2015.
All applicants must pass the following swim test requirements:
• Swim 300 yards
• Tread water for 2 minutes without using arms or hands
• Sprint 15 yards, get a 10 lb. brick from the bottom of the deep end of the pool, swim back to the shallow end and climb out of the pool with the brick in 1 minute and 40 seconds or less.
Those interested may also take the swim test before completing a job application. Swim tests will be given at Treme Rec Center, 900 N. Villere St., Monday through Sunday between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. until April 26, 2015. Those who pass the swim test will be given an application and be encouraged to sign up for a certification class.
All NORDC lifeguards are required to have a lifeguard certification. Uncertified lifeguard job applicants must attend a weekend certification class. Certified applicants must attend a one-day re-certification class.
