NEW ORLEANS – The public is invited to tune in every Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. to WBOK 1230 AM for “Real Help for Real People.” The public affairs show is hosted by Mike Rogers, CEO of the Smoking Cessation Trust (SCT), along with WBOK 1230 AM account executive (and aspiring ex-smoker), Isaac Netters.
Each week they will provide informative interviews and host lively discussions with members of the community on wide-ranging topics related to smoking cessation. The weekly, one-hour show is underwritten by Nurtur and the Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI).
Topics will range from the free products and services available for those eligible to register for membership in the Smoking Cessation Trust to discussions about the city’s smoking ban to reducing Louisiana’s high rate of smoking. Invited guests include health care leaders, caller testimonials, and health providers from across the city and state, who work tirelessly to try to get Louisianans to quit.
“Quitting is lonely, hard work,” Rogers, CEO of Smoking Cessation Trust Management Services, said. “Smokers who share their efforts with family and friends can get the support they need to quit and stay smoke free. Through this new radio show, we at SCT continue our commitment to helping smokers see that quitting is not about what they’re giving up, but rather what they can gain from quitting—a healthier life.”
The Smoking Cessation Trust is the result of a court judgment in a 14-year-old class action lawsuit entitled Scott v. American Tobacco Company. The judgment became final in 2011 and ordered certain tobacco companies to fund a statewide, 10-year smoking cessation program to benefit more than 210,000 Louisiana smokers who are members of the plaintiff class (the "Scott Class"). The recipient of the award was a court-established and court-supervised smoking cessation program to benefit all Louisiana residents who began smoking cigarettes before September 1, 1988.
