NEW ORLEANS – Over 300 parents, kids and volunteers participated in "The Physics of Sound: Waves, Vibrations and Music" STEM Saturday hosted by STEM NOLA on Jan. 27 at the Pete Sanchez Multi-Center in the Lower 9th ward.
Students worked with STEM professionals and college students on activities and projects which demonstrated the principles and physics of sound.
Each student built either a musical instrument or a functional speaker to reinforce the lesson about sound.
Dr. Lana Joseph of Higher Level Speech and Hearing Center engaged kids and parents about the ear, the importance of hearing and tested their hearing. Louisiana Jazz Museum had a station to introduce kids and parents to the History of Jazz and the influence on New Orleans.
The purpose of its existence is to expose, inspire and engage members in the surrounding communities about the opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). ILSI Engineering, Entergy, City of New Orleans, and NORDC sponsored the Jan. 27 STEM Saturday program.
STEM NOLA will resume programming on March 10 at Gernon Brown Center in City Park and the topic will be, "The Power of Wind!"
