New Orleans Mayor, Sheriff Meeting Over Prisoner Dispute

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman are meeting in a federal judge's chambers about the New Orleans jail after years of being at odds in court over its management.

Neither Landrieu nor Gusman commented as they entered the closed-door meeting Friday.

The two are at odds over Gusman's policy of housing state prisoners at the jail while sending many local pre-trial detainees to other parish jails several hours away.

The state corrections secretary also was slated to attend the meeting. It was announced earlier this week in court filings.

The city funds the jail, which is operated by Gusman.

Landrieu and Gusman disagree on whether more new jail space should be built and the cost of court-ordered reforms.
