NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans official says the city is working on a plan to take over a monitoring program that uses electronic ankle bracelets to keep tabs on people awaiting trial.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman recently said he plans to pull out of the program Oct. 17.
The sheriff said his office hasn't been paid for the program since Jan. 1.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration counters that Gusman's office hasn't provided any feedback on a proposed cooperative endeavor agreement.
Charles West, the director of New Orleans' Office of Criminal Justice, said Tuesday that the city is looking at numerous options, including using the police department or seeking a private contractor to operate the program. West said he's confident the city will be ready to announce a plan next month.
