Tuesday, Nov. 29 – World War II pilot's gold ring, belonging to U.S. Army Air Forces pilot 2nd Lt. Jules Hymel, returned to his children after 73 years by VFW National Commander Brian Duffy, 10:00 a.m., fulfilling the wishes of 84-year-old Egidio Girardi, who has been the custodian of Hymel's ring since 1943. Girardi and his brother found Hymel dangling by his parachute from a chestnut tree after seeing his P-38 fighter crash near their home in the mountains of northern Italy on Christmas Eve 1943. The brothers carried the injured pilot home and tried to attend to his wounds, but eventually took him to hospital, where, despite efforts to conceal his identity as an American, he was discovered and taken prisoner by the Germans. Girardi no longer remembers whether the ring slipped off the pilot's finger or was given to the family for safekeeping.

Location: National World War II Museum, 945 Magazine St., New Orleans.
