BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana has a new highway safety chief.
Gov. John Bel Edwards has appointed attorney Lisa Freeman as executive director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
Freeman has worked as an assistant prosecutor in Baton Rouge for 24 years, eventually becoming chief prosecutor in Baton Rouge City Court. She also worked as a senior special assistant parish attorney for East Baton Rouge Parish. Most recently, Freeman was legal adviser to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission oversees the state's highway safety grant program, aimed at reducing traffic crashes. Freeman takes over the position vacated by Katara Williams, who was first appointed in mid-2016 and left to work for the Southern University System.
