NEW ORLEANS – The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) Board of Commissioners announce the appointment of Derek Boese as the new Executive Director of the East Jefferson Levee District (EJLD).
As Executive Director, Boese oversees the 24/7 operation, maintenance and security of approximately 30 miles of federal levees and floodwalls, 24 floodgates and four breakwaters along Lake Pontchartrain and the east bank of the Mississippi River.
During his career as an engineering and construction executive, specializing in strategic planning and organizational management, Boese has managed the Louisiana based operations of several national engineering firms such as Professional Services Industries (PSI) and Atkins North America. After Hurricane Katrina, he served as the first Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Hurricane Protection Office (HPO).
In 2003, he commanded a U.S. Army combat engineer company during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Engineer Regiment Bronze Order of the deFleury Medal for his 11 years of service.
Boese serves as a board member of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) and the Louisiana Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). He holds a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from Rice University, a Masters in Engineering Management from Missouri University of Science and Technology, and is currently working on his Juris Doctor at Loyola University New Orleans. He resides in Metairie with his wife Julie and three children.
