NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Eviction hearings in New Orleans have been rescheduled for next month — a decision made days after they were halted due to a new federal moratorium amid the coronavirus pandemic.
New Orleans tenants will be able to submit evidence to show if they eligible to avoid evictions when the hearings begin on Oct. 5, Orleans Parish Civil District Courts spokesperson Walt Pierce said in a news release Wednesday.
First City Court Constable Lambert Boissiere, Jr. told The Times-Picayune / The New Orleans Advocate that judges stopped all evictions for failure to pay rent Thursday, two days after a federal directive issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared landlords shall not evict a “covered person” from any residential property for failing to make rent payments.
Renters covered must meet four criteria, including having an income of less than $99,000 for a single person and showing that they have sought government assistance to pay their rent.
The federal directive halts such evictions for eligible persons until the end of this year.
