NEW ORLEANS – Mullin Landscape Associates will host an upcoming volunteer and donation event on Friday, April 28, at Sugar Roots Farm, 10701 Willow Dr., on the West Bank, at 8:00 a.m., in honor of Arbor Day.
Mullin Landscape employees will be donating 30 various fruit and citrus trees to the nonprofit teaching farm that has a mission to foster compassion and physical wellness in metro New Orleans communities through farm-to-fork education and to make a positive impact on the environment using a sustainable, free-range working farm model. Sugar Roots Farm offers educational farm tours, interaction with farm animals, grammar school day tours, kids’ camps and they host birthday parties.
Sugar Roots Farm owner and founder Sharessa Garland moved to New Orleans in 2010 bringing with her more than 15 years of animal-husbandry and farming experience. As a parent, she quickly identified the need for a place where children in the metropolitan New Orleans area could learn about farming, humane animal treatment and where they could meet and interact with farm animals in their own environment.
Garland worked to identify a location within Orleans Parish where she could make her vision a reality and where she could share the values that farming can bring forth. These values are what led to this partnership with Mullin Landscape Associates, reps said. The dedication of the team at Sugar Roots Farm ensures that this donation will be cared for, put to good use and enjoyed by generations of New Orleans families for years to come, they said.
Having an orchard on site will add to their sustainable model and potentially help raise money for their operations, Mullin reps said. Mullin is looking forward to giving back to the community as well as the benefits of the team building aspect of this endeavor, they said.
