MONROE, LA (AP) — Monroe has received a $1.1 million grant from the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness to bring five of the city's community centers and the Monroe Civic Center up to par as evacuation centers.
Monroe city officials announced the construction project for its evacuation facilities Tuesday.
The News-Star reports Monroe has a parish-to-parish agreement to provide shelter to evacuees from Lafourche, St. John the Baptist and Terrebonne parishes in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster.
The Monroe Community Centers can provide shelter for nearly 4,000 evacuees.
