Michele K. Sutton
President and CEO | North Oaks Health System
Michele K. Sutton, FACHE, was drawn to healthcare administration for a singular reason — a deep sense of purpose to help people when they are most vulnerable.
“I wanted to make a meaningful difference, not just in individual lives but across an entire community,” she said. As the head of North Oaks Health System — the largest independent hospital service district in Louisiana — she has become what she calls the “chief storyteller,” ensuring that the public understands the value of the organization’s work.
Under her guidance, North Oaks has doubled its provider network and completed more than half a billion dollars in construction projects. Included in that number was this past September’s ribbon cutting on a $50 million, 96,000-square-foot clinic on the Northshore called North Oaks Clinic Building 3, part of what the company says is a mission to modernize healthcare infrastructure and improve access to clinical services.
In efforts to address workforce shortages, North Oaks has created a career advancement program that has helped 26 medical assistants become licensed practical nurses and raised minimum wage from $9 to $17 an hour. It has also held medical insurance premiums constant for six consecutive years and created Louisiana’s first hospital-based food pantry for patients and outpatients. The 65-year-old health system is headquartered between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, with facilities in Tangipahoa and Livingston parishes. Boasting more than 3,000 employees, it was just honored by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the “Top 150 Places to Work in Healthcare” in the nation, one of five organizations in Louisiana to earn the distinction.
Sutton’s career path has been built on growth and adaptability. Starting as the health system’s community resources officer in 1988, she advanced through increasingly responsible positions, including chief operating officer, executive vice president and ultimately president and CEO. In 2025, she was also named chair of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
“Every decision we make is guided by this principle: to enhance the well-being of our patients, employees and community, while preserving the independence that allows us to be nimble and innovative.”
Sutton stressed that North Oaks reaches beyond the role of just healthcare provider, into an economic catalyst by contributing $3.2 billion annually to the region’s economy.
Her leadership style emphasizes servant leadership and collaboration.
“I believe the best ideas often come from those closest to the work,” she says. “Leadership is about empowering others — creating an environment where people feel valued, supported and inspired to achieve their full potential.”
