NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Sports fans in New Orleans will be seeing some changes taking place in their stadiums soon.
The New Orleans Saints and Pelicans have announced plans to renovate the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and the Smoothie King Center.
Officials said in a press release Tuesday that an agreement has been reached among the two teams, the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District, and SMG, which manages the Superdome and the King Center, for renovations to modernize the properties.
Plans will focus on improving the fan experience. Some upgrades include: state-of-the-art LED video boards, enhanced LED lighting and audio systems, remodeling of suites and concession stands areas, and energy efficient renovations.
"The recent improvements to the Smoothie King Center and the constantly improving facilities at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome are important to our fans," said Saints and Pelicans Owner Tom Benson. "We listen to their input. We work hard each year to meet the needs of our fans. They deserve it and I think this announcement laying out the new plans will only further enhance the fans' experience in both buildings."
The estimated cost for the renovations is $40 million, most of which will be funded by Benson's $25 million commitment to the project.
"This is a very significant investment of private dollars into one of the state's most valuable assets," said Ron Forman, chairman of the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District. "We are excited about the major investment into two landmark Louisiana facilities."
Renovations for the multi-million dollar project will begin immediately and are expected to be completed for fall 2016.
