Meeting Set In Judge's Chambers To Discuss Orleans Jail

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman are set to attend a Friday meeting to discuss issues surrounding the housing of state inmates at the New Orleans jail.

Landrieu has been highly critical of Gusman's practice of housing some 300 inmates at New Orleans' new jail, while shipping some pre-trial detainees to other parishes.

In a court filing Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Lance Africk said Friday's meeting will be held in court chambers and that Corrections Secretary James LeBlanc also is to attend.

The city funds the jail. The sheriff operates it. Landrieu and Gusman have been at odds in court for years over the management of the jail, whether more new jail space should be built, and the cost of court-ordered reforms.
