HOUSTON (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu visited Houston to thanks the city's leaders and its citizens for providing shelter for residents fleeing his city in front of Hurricane Katrina 10 years ago.
Landrieu joined Houston Mayor Annise Parker, former Mayor Bill White and former Harris County Judge Robert Eckles at a news conference Thursday. Landrieu said New Orleanians "would not have survived without friends and neighbors like the people from Houston."
The news conference is among events scheduled to mark the 10th anniversary of the disaster that inundated virtually all of the Crescent City and scattering hundreds of thousands of its residents to the winds.
Of more than 1 million people who evacuated the coast in front of Katrina, nearly 250,000 residents opted to travel west and ended up in Houston.
