NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu postponed the scheduled State of the City Address to instead address the media on the shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise and four others.
He issued the following statement:
“As everyone knows, Steve is one of our congressman, and he is a strong fighter for the city of New Orleans. I have worked with him, and I have great admiration and respect for him. I served with him in the Legislature for 10 years, and he is a dear friend. I want to ask the people of New Orleans and of the country to keep him and the other victims in your thoughts and prayers. I am encouraged by reports that he is in stable condition. We continue to pray for his full and speedy recovery, and our thoughts are with his family.
“In times like these, we have to pause and reflect, which is why I postponed the State of the City Address today. We have to be clear: any attack on any public official is an attack on our very democracy, on all Americans and on our country. This is not a partisan issue. The world sees us battling politically for what we believe is best for our constituents, but what the public might not understand is that we spend a lot of time together and so do our families.
“President Trump just gave an address on the incident, and he said it well: we are stronger when we stand together and better when we work for the common good. We have to put aside all our differences and unite against this cowardly violence in our country. This senseless violence cannot go unchecked.”
More details on the new date and time of the State of the City Address will be provided at a later time.
The 2017 State of the City Address was supposed to take place at The Civic Theatre, 510 O’Keefe Ave., at 10:30 a.m.
It will be Mayor Landrieu’s final State of the City Address.
