MANDEVILLE, LA (AP) — A "beach" is under construction along the Mandeville lakefront.
Media outlets report that Mandeville Beach could be open to the public within the next few weeks. About 13,500 cubic yards of sand is currently being hauled in this week to create the beach, which will extend about 100 feet into Lake Pontchartrain.
Mandeville Public Works Director David DeGeneres says the work is being done under an $86,750 contract with McGee Excavating.
WDSU-TV’s Heath Allen reports dump trucks full of sand have been spotted in that area, and the beach will be located at the east end of Lakeshore Drive at Jackson Avenue in Mandeville next to a popular playground and splash park.
NOLA.com/ The Times-Picayune’s Kim Chatelain reports the recreation area will extend from the seawall across Lakeshore from the Pontchartrain Yacht Club.
