Whether he’s performing, guiding his business or just relating to the people around him, Lupe Valdiviez, Jr. is dynamic and determined. He bases all of his dealing on one thing: “I always keep my word,” he says.
The young man from Houma spent his childhood in poverty and turmoil. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade, but music was his inspiration. A drummer, who like Cher and Madonna, is known now by one his first name, Lupe played as a sideman with a wide variety of musical acts, including Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band. Lupe’s traveled the country, performing in 48 different states.
Lupe is goal driven and said he set the following goal early on: “I’ll start something one day and treat people right.”
He did. On Dec. 7, 2009, Lupe began his business, Karma Entertainment. Through it he represents his own band, Karma, along with 10 to 15 other bands that play all types of music, from Zydeco to Motown.
Karma plays all kinds of events, from small corporate parties to vast outdoor festivals. They also play weddings, private parties and casinos.
From 2010 to 2014, the band was Beau Rivage Resort and Casino’s top performing band.
Karma has also played at events for corporations including Microsoft, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Chevron.
“We are professional in every way and make and everyone feel comfortable,” Lupe says.
Lupe says he loves the challenge of managing all the different personalities in his band and the people he represents.
“Along with the music, you have to be responsible for the lighting, dancers and so much more,” he adds.
His business handles audio gear and engineers, backline and design, event coordination, logistics and production and management.
“On any given weekend, there could be 40 to 50 events happening in the city from private parties to corporate events,” he says. “There are just not enough quality bands to meet the demand. I’m always looking for new groups to represent.”
Lupe’a faith and drive keeps him excelling.
“I’m a go-getter,” he says. “I want to be all over the world one day.”
