Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant to Unveil Expansion on Dec. 17

NEW ORLEANS – On Sunday, Dec. 17, the owners of Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant will throw a party to show off an expansion that adds more than 8,000 square feet of new dining and drinking space. The business took over a neighboring property at 709 Tchoupitoulas Street that was built in the 1880s. Restaurant management worked with the Historic District Landmarks Commission on the $3.5 million project led by architect Nicholas Musso of Musso Architects.

The result is a new dining room and private event space, an expanded courtyard, a second balcony, more restrooms and a new elevator.

“This reveal has been nearly two years in the making and we can’t wait for our guests to enjoy this new space,” said John Kirkendoll, manager partner of the bar and restaurant, in a press release. “This means more space for game day celebrations, parade watching, happy hours, convention events and all the celebrations that we love hosting at Lucy’s – and of course, we had to kick it off with a party.”

Lucy’s began in 1985 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. In 1992, ownership brought the beach and surf bar concept to the Warehouse District in New Orleans, where it’s been popular for more than three decades.

And, considering the sad state of the 2023 New Orleans Saints, let’s all take a moment to savor that time former quarterback Drew Brees taught his famous pre-game chant to the Lucy’s crowd in the days after the team’s historic 2010 Super Bowl victory.

The grand opening event is free to the public and requires no reservations.
