Lower Mississippi River (LMR) Dredging Update 11816

The Corps’ Mississippi Valley New Orleans (MVN) did not open any additional bays on the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway today (Mile 128.8 to Mile 127.3 Above Head of Passes [AHP]).  The total number of bays opened as of today Monday, January 18, 2016 remains 210 with an estimated flow through the structure of 201,000 cubic feet per second.

The Coalition continues to work with the Corps to keep the industry hopper dredge NEWPORT past January 27, 2016 the estimated date it will have completed the current contract.  The MVN plans to solicit a bid for an industry hopper tomorrow, January 19, 2016.  The MVN is also working to secure the cutterhead dredge that responded to the bid solicited on January 14, 2016.

The Corps’ Philadelphia District hopper dredge McFARLAND has been delayed in transit to the Mississippi River due to storm conditions in the Atlantic Ocean.  The McFARLAND has resumed her transit after seeking safe harbor in the Chesapeake Bay.  The McFARLAND is now expected to begin dredging in Southwest Pass on Friday, January 22, 2016 under an approved Red Flag request.
