BATON ROUGE (AP) — Additional state troopers will redeploy this week to the City of New Orleans to support the New Orleans Police Department's efforts to deter crime.
Louisiana State Police Col. Mike Edmonson said Wednesday they've been planning the redeployment since the completion of this year's Mardi Gras detail. Edmonson says troopers will be proactive, policing with an "all crimes" approach focusing on illegal guns, illegal weapons and fugitives. Enforcement efforts will use uniformed vehicle and foot patrol, plainclothes investigative operations and commercial vehicle enforcement.
The redeployment is in partnership with the New Orleans business community. The New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau has raised $2.5 million to fund operations within the French Quarter, Central Business District, Marigny, and Bywater areas.
Upward of 60 uniformed troopers are expected in those areas beginning Thursday.
