The harbingers of autumn are here: school supplies, Saints preseason and even Halloween candy stocked on store shelves. Before you give up on summer, however, consider one last vacation in August.
The Henry Howard Hotel, one of the newest hotels in New Orleans, is a luxury boutique hotel that is offering a 25 percent discount on rooms for Louisiana residents now through August 31.
Located in the Garden District, the historic double gallery townhouse was designed by architect Henry Howard and constructed in 1867 for Edward Conery, the steamboat owner and ship chandler who gifted the townhouse to his two daughters. It features Greek Revival architectural elements like Corinthian columns, and Italianate aspects as well, plus galleries with walkthrough windows. The hotel’s parlor includes a bar, 12-foot ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, crown molding and red pine flooring.
The hotel has undergone an extensive redesign that works to balance modern tastes with historical flavor. New York city-based Hunter Mabry Design and its founder, Lauren Mabry, created the vision for the redesign. The 18 bedrooms feature a curated mix of vintage and custom-designed furniture, brass and percussion instruments, and commissioned artwork by local artist Hayley Gaberlavage. Graphic designer Kathleen Fitzgerald created accents that also appear throughout the hotel. A New Orleans-inspired toile wallpaper depicts iconic landmarks and colorful characters, in addition to custom H wallpaper resembling the columns on the front porch.
One of the hotel’s owners, Kyle Fitzgerald, encourages locals to treat themselves to a booking at the Henry Howard, saying, “We want our neighbors to experience the newly restored Henry Howard Hotel, a calm oasis within the vibrant Garden District area. The historic hotel combines modern elements with Southern charm, which makes it the perfect place to stay for a local Staycation.”
The hotel sits on the corner of Prytania and Josephine, and is easy walking distance to restaurants, bars and shops on St. Charles and Magazine. New Orleans-based locals may just want to sip a drink on the hotel’s porch or gallery and retire to their rooms, but this staycation deal is for any Louisiana resident with a valid driver’s license to prove their residency.
The rooms themselves offer beds with high-end linens and summer weight down comforters, and many of them have seating areas as well. Five different room options, as well as the Edward Conery Suite, are available for the staycation deal and rates start as low as $112 per night.
