Lafourche Voters To Consider Water Tax Renewal

THIBODAUX, LA (AP) — Dirk Barrios, Lafourche Water District 1 general manager, says the 3.57-mill tax renewal on the Dec. 6 ballot will allow the district to keep up with operations and maintenance of the system.

Water District 1 covers all of Lafourche Parish with the exception of the city of Thibodaux.

The current tax expires at the end of 2015. The renewed tax would last from 2016 to 2025.

Barrios says last year the tax raised nearly $2.8 million for the district.

Tammy Wendelschaefer, Lafourche Parish deputy registrar, tells The Courier’s Aaren Gordon the number of people eligible to vote on this renewal is 45,095.

Wendy Thibodeaux, Lafourche Parish tax assessor, said the tax costs the owner of a $150,000 home $26.78 per year.
