THIBODAUX, LA (AP) — Before the money is even in hand, the Lafourche Parish Council has started debating how to manage the $8.2 million the parish was awarded in the BP oil spill settlement.
Last week the council unanimously approved accepting a settlement of $8.18 million from BP for the parish's economic losses stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.
At Tuesday's meeting, The Daily Comet’s Meredith Burns reports Councilman Aaron Caillouet proposed waiting until next year to spend the money so there will not be a conflict of interest for the councilmen and parish president running for office this fall.
Parish officials said the money is expected to come to the parish within the next three months, and it will be placed in the general account.
