Lafayette Farmers Market Now Accepting Food Stamps

LAFAYETTE, LA (AP) — The local foods movement is becoming more accessible to the community thanks to a farmers market accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, formerly known as food stamps.

The Lafayette Farmers and Artisans Market at the Horse Farm now has several vendors who have agreed to accept payments through a new token system at the market. The Advertiser’s Megan Wyatt reports customers with an electronic benefit transfer card can visit the market's welcome tent to receive tokens in exchange for a debit amount of his or her choice.

Cardholders can then spend tokens as currency for eligible items, such as breads, cereals, fruits, vegetable, meats, poultry and dairy products.
