Lafayette Board Finds Money for Extra Teacher Pay

LAFAYETTE, LA (AP) — An additional $1,000 will be added to the salary schedules of Lafayette Parish public school teachers.

The Advertiser’s Amanda McElfresh reports the Lafayette Parish School Board unanimously voted Wednesday to use some of the money from a 2002 sales tax in teachers' regular pay. Teachers will still receive a supplemental check each year, which would be about $1,200 per teacher.

The decision came a day after a committee voted to recommend putting some of the money into teacher salaries, rather than lumping it all into an annual distribution. The additional $1,000 will be divided among teachers' regular paychecks.
