LA Unemployment Benefit Debit Cards Going Away

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Louisiana Workforce Commission says people who get unemployment benefits by debit card have until Tuesday to change to direct-deposit banking. Those who don't will get benefits mailed as checks, meaning delays of several days.

A news release says the change is required because J.P. Morgan Chase is dropping the prepaid debit cards.

Balances remaining on those cards can be used after Oct. 27, but there won't be any more deposits after that.

The commission says unemployment recipients need to immediately update their banking preferences in the HiRE portal at www.laworks.net . If they don't, they'll get paper checks mailed to the address on file with the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

J.P. Morgan Chase's changes affected state income tax refunds beginning in late September.
