BATON ROUGE (AP) — State Treasurer John Kennedy is warning that a new scam is targeting people by pretending that a national organization has their unclaimed property.
The treasurer's office said Monday that letters have been sent to people claiming to be from the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.
The letters ask people to buy a stamp in order to claim a sweepstakes award that ended up as unclaimed property. They warn the sweepstakes award proceeds will be divided between the national association and a charitable organization unless money for the stamp is sent.
While the organization is legitimate, it doesn't return unclaimed property to people. That authority in Louisiana rests with the treasurer's office.
The treasurer's office says anyone getting such a letter should contact its unclaimed property program at 1-888-925-4127.
