BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Louisiana Senate has unanimously backed a bill that would shift New Orleans public schools from state control back to the Orleans Parish School Board.
The Advocate’s Mark Ballard reports the measure by New Orleans Sen. Karen Carter Peterson would establish a framework that would return all the schools by 2018, or 2019 at the latest.
The state has run 52 New Orleans public schools for the past decade, under the Recovery School District that was created in 2003 to take over failing schools. The RSD accelerated its takeovers after Hurricane Katrina.
After only a few minutes of discussion Wednesday, the Senate voted 36-0 for the bill, sending it to the House for consideration.
Most of the schools to be transferred are public charter schools.
