NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has proclaimed Saturday, April 30, 2016, as National Lemonade Day in the state of Louisiana. This is the sixth consecutive year that the Governor's office has proclaimed it Lemonade Day in the state.
Miss Louisiana USA 2016 Maaliyah Papillion and Saints Mascot Sir Saint will be joined by elected officials, community leaders and dozens of youth from the Stallings Gentilly Playground Booster Club for the Lemonade Day Louisiana Kick-Off Event on Saturday, April 30, at 10:30 a.m.
The event will take place in front of Stallings Playground, 1600 Gentilly Blvd. (located one block from the main entrance of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival).
Lemonade stands will be set-up in front of the playground from 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
More than 20,000 youth across Louisiana are expected to participate in the sixth annual Lemonade Day. This year's program is set to be the largest to date, since entrepreneurs John Georges and Todd Graves introduced the program in 2010.
In addition, Shreveport Mayor Ollie S. Tyler, Baton Rouge Mayor Melvin 'Kip' Holden, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Thibodaux Mayor Tommy Eschete, Lafayette Mayor Joel Robideaux, Monroe Mayor James E. Mayo, and a number of elected officials as well as community and business leaders have issued resolutions, proclamations, and certificates regarding this year's Lemonade Day Louisiana.
On Lemonade Day Louisiana, the entire community is encouraged to purchase lemonade from the many stands that will be set-up throughout the state on Saturday.
Lemonade Day Louisiana is a free, community-wide program that fosters entrepreneurship and character development among Louisiana's youth ages 4-18 by supporting them in establishing and operating their own lemonade businesses. Young entrepreneurs are provided with a free backpack, which contains detailed support materials including an Entrepreneur Workbook to help them establish their lemonade stand. These entrepreneurs are advised to spend a little, save a little and share a little by donating a portion of their proceeds to a local charity of their choice. Registration and participation is free and all youngsters are encouraged to participate.
More than 30 corporate sponsors have teamed up once again to bring Lemonade Day to Louisiana on Saturday, including Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, The Advocate Newspapers, CSRS, Inc., Acadian Companies, Boysie Bollinger, Bollinger Shipyards, LED, the Society of Louisiana CPAs, LSU's E.J. Ourso College of Business, the New Orleans Saints, the New Orleans Pelicans, CenturyLink, USAgencies, Synergy Bank and a host of statewide corporate sponsors and partners.
Lemonade Day Louisiana has reached more than 75,000 kids over the past six years. Louisiana is one of over 56 regions in the U.S. and Canada to participate in Lemonade Day.
