NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jefferson Parish teachers are upset that recent one-time bonuses haven't led to permanent salary boosts in the parish's recently approved operating budget.
NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune’s Jessica Williams reports that the school board on Monday approved a $614 million budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year, but salary increases were not included.
In 2014, some teachers received as much as $1,200 thanks to extra tax revenue. Board member Marion Bonura says he had expected his salary this year to rise to a similar level.
School system employees are getting up to $600 each this year, a one-time bonus from the system's settlement with BP after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil disaster.
Board President Cedric Floyd says the board could look for more ways to pay teachers when the board submits its budget to the state.
