BATON ROUGE (AP) — Two Jefferson Parish lawmakers will soon end their tenure in the Louisiana House.
Reps. Joe Lopinto of Metairie and Bryan Adams of Gretna, both Republicans, say they have gotten new jobs and won't complete their four-year terms that started in January.
A lawyer and former sheriff's deputy in his third term, Lopinto will become in-house counsel for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. He told his colleagues Tuesday that exiting the House will give him the ability to spend more time with his wife and children.
Adams, a former fire chief in his second term in office, told The Advocate’s Tyler Bridges that he's resigning from the House to become an assistant state fire marshal.
The GOP lawmakers supported Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards and backed Edwards' unsuccessful candidate for House speaker. Neither has gotten a leadership position in the majority Republican House for the new term. But both said that didn't factor into their decisions to leave.
Neither man has announced his final day in office. Special election dates haven't yet been set.
