NEW ORLEANS – The 21st Annual Burkenroad Investment Conference takes place Friday, April 28, at The Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, 500 Canal St., from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
The conference features presentations from three dozen public companies in the region. This popular event is free and open to the public, and provides individual and institutional investors the chance to hear from top management from each of these companies.
Burkenroad Reports, started in 1993, is the nation’s first university-sponsored securities analysis program. Each year 200 students from Tulane's A. B. Freeman School of Business are divided up into teams to follow 40 small-cap public companies headquartered in six southern states. Teams meet with top management, visit company sites, design financial models, and publish in-depth, un-biased investment research reports.
The companies researched are generally stocks under rocks that are underfollowed by Wall Street’s securities analysts. Burkenroad Reports has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Investor’s Business Daily, The New York Times, BARRONS, and Kiplinger’s as well as on CNN, CNBC, and PBS.
At an event at Wharton in December of 2014 the program was recognized by Re-Imagine Education as the top Teaching Delivery in Experiential Learning. Burkenroad Reports topped entries 500 universities representing 43 countries.
Each spring, the School sponsors the Burkenroad Reports Investment Conference where top management of these companies present their outlook for their companies and industries to an audience of nearly 800 individual and institutional investors.
On Dec. 31, 2001 Hancock Bank created the Burkenroad Mutual Fund (HHBUX). The fund’s money managers utilize these research reports (as well as other sources) in the management of the fund. The fund now has about $800 million dollars under management and outperformed approximately 99 percent of all mutual funds since its inception.
This program has benefited all involved, school reps said. Burkenroad Reports has created a valuable experiential learning opportunity for students and offered the region’s public companies an important vehicle with which to connect to the financial markets and investors, they said. The program boasts hundreds of alumni now working in the investment field.
Burkenroad Reports is a credit course, meeting for class on a weekly basis:
• 200 MBAs and undergraduate business students are divided into teams
• Students receive extensive training in the field of equity analysis
• Each team is assigned coverage of one public company
• Students meet with top management, visit company sites, develop financial models, and publish extensive investment research reports on the companies they follow
• Students participate in a full day analyst workshop when alumni return from Wall Street to lecture current students on "real life" applications and suggestions for securing positions in finance.
In addition to conversations with management, analysts often utilize various publicly available sources of information in creating these reports, including:
• Financial documents
• Internet
• Trade associations
• Competitors
• Customers and suppliers
