Jail Dispute To Be Aired Before New Orleans Council Panel

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans City Council members are set to hear different views on the future of a still-unopened $145 million jail building.

Tuesday's meeting of the council's criminal justice panel comes amid continuing disputes between Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration and Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman over management of the jail and the costs of court-ordered reforms.

City officials have sought to stop construction on the new building, saying the building lacks plans for securely housing inmates with medical and mental health needs.
