Inside the Industry: Food & Beverage

Baumer Foods, Inc.

In 1923, Alvin A. Baumer boldly took a loan from his future in-laws in an effort to solidify employment and an income for himself and his bride-to-be. Almost 100 years later, “Al” A. Baumer, Jr. serves as CEO of Baumer Foods, Inc., the world famous supplier of Crystal Hot Sauce, which annually ships over 3 million gallons of hot sauce worldwide.

“Our wish is that consumers agree Crystal is good on just about everything!” says Penny Baumer, VP, CFO, and wife of Al Baumer, Jr. What began as a canning company making jellies, jams, and mustards is today one of the largest suppliers of hot sauce, in addition to its other products. When Alvin A. Baumer purchased Mills Fruit Products in 1923, he unknowingly purchased a buried treasure—a secret recipe for a product called “Crystal Pure Louisiana Hot Sauce.” When Al became CEO in 1980, he wisely steered the company from canning and jellies to hot sauce and condiments.

After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Crystal production facility on Tulane Avenue and the Baumers’ residence, Al worked painstakingly to put Crystal back on the map by relocating production to Reserve and opening new administrative offices in Metairie. Baumer Foods, Inc. owes its continued success and thriving brand to its dedicated staff.
