Dr. Steve Nelson, Chancellor of LSU Health New Orleans, has been a cornerstone of medical leadership in Louisiana since 1984 when he joined the faculty of LSU Health New Orleans. Dr. Nelson oversees Louisiana’s largest health university, which includes schools of medicine, nursing, dentistry, public health, allied health, and graduate health studies, which employs nearly 3,500 and has an annual economic impact approaching $2B.
As a people-centered, health-focused organization, LSU Health New Orleans directs its research purposefully with the goal to impact the unique health issues prevalent in our state.
Dr. Nelson is leading the charge to transform education and training to reflect new knowledge and teaching models. He has led two successful reaccreditation renewals for LSU School of Medicine, the first of which was only two years after Hurricane Katrina. With his leadership, LSU continues its focus on wellness, prevention, chronic disease management and finding ways to deliver the right care at the right place at the right time.
Dr. Nelson’s goal is for LSU Health New Orleans to be ranked in the top 50 institutions by 2030. To accomplish this, he has committed resources to rebuild infrastructure, strengthen research support services, provide competitive salaries and start-up packages to recruit and retain top talent. He recently launched a $95 million renovation of research space that will provide 200,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratory space, in addition to restructuring the Graduate School, providing additional resources to the Office of Research, and investing in current faculty while actively recruiting world-class talent.
