Ingalls Wins Contract For Third Destroyer

PASCAGOULA, MS (AP) — Ingalls Shipbuilding has received a $604 million contract modification to build another Arleigh Burke-class (DDG51) Aegis guided missile destroyer for the Navy.

The ship is the third of the five DDG51 destroyers the company was awarded in June 2013.

Ingalls DDG 51 Program Manager George Nungesser says in a news release that the five-ship contract allows the shipyard to buy bulk materials and move workers from ship to ship.

He says with the addition of this contract, Ingalls will be building destroyers for the next decade.

Ingalls has delivered 28 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to the Navy. Currently under construction are the John Finn (DDG113), Ralph Johnson (DDG114), Paul Ignatius (DDG117) and Delbert D. Black (DDG119).

Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are capable of simultaneously fighting air, surface and subsurface threats.
