Hurricane Katrina Inspires Call To Action From Cards For Causes

UNION, KY – When Katrina hit ten years ago, Union, KY, business owners Mike and Debbie Rabidoux felt a powerful calling to help. What started as a simple giving initiative from their home-based business has since raised nearly a million dollars for charity, just in time for the ten-year anniversary of the event that sparked it all.

Cards for Causes launched its giving initiative in 2005, after Hurricane Katrina ravaged coastal Louisiana, to support worthwhile causes while offering high-quality, personalized greeting cards for all occasions. Since then, the greeting card distributer has given 20% of every card purchase to the nonprofit charity of the customer’s choice from a selection of more than 500 organizations in 12 categories. The company’s goal is to donate $1 million to charity by August 2016.

“When we saw the utter destruction caused by that horrific storm ten years ago, my wife Debbie and I knew we had to do something to make a difference,” said Cards for Causes co-founder Michael Rabidoux. “What started as a donation of a few thousand dollars to the American Red Cross has grown into an organization that gives more than $125,000 dollars to charity every year. We couldn’t be more proud of that.”

To date, Cards for Causes has distributed more than $740,000 in unrestricted funds to nearly 600 organizations, from large national charities like the American Cancer Society, Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Feeding America and the American Red Cross, to small local and regional charities. The funding comes directly through the company’s sales of high-quality holiday and greeting cards to businesses and individuals. At the point of sale, the customer selects a charity from the company’s extensive database to receive 20% of the card sale price.

“We are very grateful for the generous support of Cards for Causes for the past ten years,” said American Red Cross Regional CEO Trish Smitson. “The Red Cross relies on the generosity of our donors to fulfill our mission of helping families and individuals start to recover from the tragedy and devastation of disasters."

Businesses and individuals interested in helping push Cards for Causes over the $1 million mark can do so by making a purchase at CardsforCauses.com.
