NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Housing Authority of New Orleans has received $13.6 million in federal funds to make repairs to hundreds of public housing units across the city.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune’s Richard A. Webster reports the money, announced Thursday, was provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Capital Fund Program which awarded a total of $36.6 million to housing authorities throughout Louisiana.
HUD says the cash influx is intended to help "build, repair, renovate and/or modernize" public housing communities, including making "large-scale improvements such as replacing roofs or making energy-efficient upgrades to replace old plumbing and electrical systems."
The announcement comes a little more than a week after HUD released a report that found that in 2013, 7.7 million low-income families lived in severely substandard housing.
