House, Senate Back Competing Pension Hike Plans For Retired State Employees

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Both the House and Senate have passed legislation to boost the monthly pension checks for retired state employees, public school workers and teachers.

The cost-of-living increase that won unanimous House approval Monday would simply raise the benefits.

But the Advocate’s Mark Ballard reports the Senate version, passed earlier in the legislative session, is conditioned on passage of two other bills that tweak how the retirement system funds the raises and pays for administrative costs.

Both proposals would give retired state workers and public teachers over the age of 60 give a 1.5 percent increase. Retirees in the state police and public school employee pension systems would receive an increase of up to 2 percent.

The average monthly increase would be about $30.
