HOUMA, LA (AP) — When Houma native Edith Nevis wrote her new book, "Step Out of Your Box: 31 Days of Daily Encouragement," she didn't have to spend much time compiling her thoughts.
"I had written it unknowingly through my blogs," Nevis told the Courier and Daily Comet.
The spiritual guide gives readers 31 days of encouragement via bible scripture and messages written by Nevis but inspired by God.
"I needed to simplify (the scriptures) for those who still can't understand it after reading the King James version," she said.
Each scripture page has an accompanying journal page so readers can write down their thoughts.
She urges readers to "come out of that shell that they place around themselves and allow the love of God to heal them and love them beyond the pain."
Nevis didn't always have a strong relationship with God. It wasn't until 2009 as she was preparing to leave New York City for her native Houma that she connected with God like never before.
After decades of working in the food and beverage industry, Nevis retired.
"I got tired of New York and all the expenses and the rat race mentality," she said. "Life was passing me by and I wasn't enjoying it."
Nevis packed up two suitcases, her 13-year-old daughter and headed for Louisiana.
Currently, she works in the Courier's office as a news clerk.
When she arrived in Houma, she began wondering who God was.
The 46-year-old mother said she'd take walks and have coffee with him. "Our conversations weren't just verbal."
After chronicling a friend's three-year journey as a missionary, Nevis became inspired to write inspirational blogs.
As she blogged on platforms like Facebook, she realized she needed to get her message out to her blog followers through a book.
"I decided to do 31 days (of encouragement) and get it in their hands," Nevis said.
The book isn't just for people already in touch with their spirituality, however. She wants to reach those who aren't overly religious as well. "I'm writing to those who are just coming on the scene who go to church, but don't have a relationship with God."
In a year's time, Nevis completed the book and began the self-publishing process.
Now, the book's available on Amazon and in select libraries for check out.
"The book speaks to readers right where they're at," Nevis said. "It has no boundaries."
She will have a book signing in the coming months at Assumption Parish Library.
