NEW ORLEANS — The University of Holy Cross announced a $150,000 grant from the Delta Regional Authority that will fund 10 scholarships for culinary arts students who begin their education at Delgado Community College and transfer to UHC to complete their Bachelor of Science degree.
The grant will provide scholarships beginning in the spring 2021 semester for eligible students. The scholarships will fund a total of four semesters including their last semester at Delgado and three semesters at UHC. The last semester at UHC will involve a paid internship at a variety of the area’s food and beverage manufacturing plants including Blue Runner, Zatarains, BlendMark, BEC Copacking, Happy Raptor, El Guapo Bitters, and Camellia Beans Brand.
Students in their second year of Delgado’s associate degree program interested in obtaining scholarships through this unique food science/culinary arts college partnership can register online on Delgado’s website at www.dcc.edu. Any students who have received their culinary arts degree at Delgado since 2016 are also eligible to apply.
“This grant will provide 50% tuition relief to students wishing to turn their associate degree into a Bachelor of Science degree and ultimately double their future earnings potential,” said Dr. Darryl Holliday, director of UHC’s food science department.
Now in its fifth year, UHC’s food science program offers Bachelor of Science degrees in food science, beverage science, food business and culinology as well as Master of Science in management with a concentration in food business management degree. Food science degrees are up nationwide as overall employment of food scientist is projected to grow 6 percent over the next decade, faster than the average of all other occupations.
