COVINGTON, LA (AP) — A Louisiana city is planning to turn its old, abandoned fire station into a new community center.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune’s Kim Chatelain reports the roughly 80-year-old building housed the city of Covington's main fire station until 1972. It's been vacant since a local police division moved out five years ago because of fears the building wasn't structurally sound.
Now Covington Mayor Mike Cooper says he plans to seek $400,000 in the city's 2018 budget to renovate the old fire station. Its second floor would be eliminated, while the first floor would have approximately 1,300 square feet (120 sq. meters) for receptions, meetings and other community events.
If the Covington City Council agrees to the mayor's spending request, Cooper said the city will seek construction bids for the renovation early next year.
