BATON ROUGE, La. – BUSINESS WIRE – Healthy Blue recently donated and installed commercial refrigerators and/or freezers to 11 food pantries across Louisiana.
The donation, which totaled approximately $50,000, will allow the food pantries to increase food-storage capacity and assist in their mission of providing much-needed food to nearly 4,000 individuals and families in their communities.
“As a health plan, we recognize the impact food insecurity has on a community. Having access to nutritious food is something we sometimes take for granted,” said Aaron Lambert, president, Healthy Blue. “At Healthy Blue, one of our goals is to remove barriers to overall health and well-being and that includes supporting efforts to help ensure Louisianans have access to healthy nourishment. By equipping food pantries with new refrigerators or freezers, we can support the great work they accomplish every day by helping them reach more individuals in our communities.”
The donated refrigerators or freezers are Traulsen G-Series energy efficient units, which offer between 24.2 and 46 cubic feet of storage space. The all-metal construction and overall design enables better performance, which helps extend the life of fresh produce.
“We are humbled at being chosen to receive a beautiful new two-door commercial cooler. Every week we need space to safely store 130 gallons of milk and 130 dozen eggs for our pantry families. This donation has made this possible,” said Theresa Sandler, founder/director, Shepard’s Market at St. John Methodist Church.
“Because of this generous donation, we are able to serve more healthy options of dairy and produce to the 400+ needy families that come to us for food assistance each month.”
