NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Four years after fire destroyed a New Orleans bakery that made popular hand-sized fried fruit and chocolate pies, another bakery in the area is planning something similar.
Haydel's Bakery says on its Facebook page that it's bringing back a product it made in the 1960s.
It says there'll be a "soft launch" on Friday. A posting on Facebook said the pies will be sold at first at its bakery and at Fleurty Girl — a retail chain of four stores carrying local products including clothes and food.
Although out-of-state companies have continued to sell baked or fried "hand pies," there hasn't been a local version since a fire in July 2012 destroyed the Hubig's Pies factory.
Hubig's owners said they'd rebuild, but it hasn't happened.
