Gulfport Residents: Proposed Development Will Cause Flooding

GULFPORT, MS (AP) — Residents of North Gulfport say a project proposed along Turkey Creek will cause flooding if 432 acres of wetlands are filled in.

The Sun Herald’s Vicki Terrinoni reports environmental organizers and hundreds of residents voiced their opposition to the 524-acre project on land south of Interstate 10 and west of U.S. Highway 49 along Turkey Creek at a meeting Tuesday night.

Ward Investments teamed up with Gulfport in submitting a joint application and notification to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the state departments of Marine Resources and Environmental Quality.

According to the application, the project would build 355 acres of mixed-use commercial/retail, business-park, industrial and recreation including a mixed-use town center and publicly accessible trails.
