NEW ORLEANS — Glass Half Full, the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, the Lower 9th Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement & Development, Common Ground Relief and ReCoast have teamed up to collect Christmas trees across southeast Louisiana and use them for a marsh restoration project in collaboration with the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe.
Trees are being collected until Feb. 20 at various locations across south Louisiana. In March, the coalition will use the trees to build a natural berm mimicking coastline and re-establishing degraded marsh. Glass Half Full’s recycled glass sand will be used in upcycled burlap bags to hold the trees in place. The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana will then provide native vegetation to plant behind the berm in order to restore the marsh.
Only natural, unflocked trees can be recycled by the coalition of organizations.
“We are excited to offer this service, which will help slow coastal land loss in an area where it is particularly destructive,” said Franziska Trautmann, co- founder of Glass Half Full, which is leading the project. “The people of south Louisiana are aware of the problems our state is facing, and they want to become part of the solution. This gives them a way to do it.”
