Gretna Council Approves Moratorium On Bars

GRETNA, LA (AP) — The Gretna City Council has voted unanimously to impose a moratorium on liquor licenses for new bars and bars moving to new locations within the city.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune’s Diana Samuels reports council members approved a 30-day moratorium Wednesday, but city officials suggested they could consider a 6-month moratorium at the council's next meeting a month from now.

Gretna Police Chief Arthur Lawson said some of the bars in town have become more popular, and as a result there have been complaints about parking problems, noise and other issues. He asked for the moratorium while the city takes a comprehensive look at the rules surrounding how liquor licenses are issued.
