NEW ORLEANS – More than 350 middle and high school students from the Greater New Orleans area will display the results of their scientific inquiry at the 62nd Annual Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF), February 26 – March 1 at the Tulane University Lavin-Bernick Center.
Student exhibits will be on display to the public on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and Thursday morning. Additionally, student-led tours of the Loyola and Tulane University campuses will be available for GNOSEF participants. Admission to public viewing days is free and open to the community.
Since 1956, GNOSEF has encouraged independent student research in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
The Fair is open to any student nominated by their middle or high school within the designated, Region IX parishes of Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines. Entrants fall into two divisions: Junior Division, comprised of middle school students (grades 6-8) and Senior Division, comprised of high school students (grades 9-12).
More than $60,000 in cash/non-cash awards, prizes, grants and scholarships will be awarded to GNOSEF 2018 winners/teachers and schools, including a trip for four students and two teachers to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), which draws over 1,600 students from 70 countries with more than $4 million in cash awards and prizes.
Selected category winners at the GNOSEF in New Orleans are also eligible to compete for state honors at the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair (LSEF) held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, March 19-21, 2018, with those winners going on to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) to be held May 13-18, 2018 in Pittsburg, PA.
Returning this year to GNOSEF, Entergy Corporation is generously providing a $1,000 “Powering the Future” scholarship to be awarded to the female, high school senior with the most promising project. The scholarship is part of a $10,000 grant Entergy made to Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair, Inc.
“We are honored to continue our support of the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair, Inc. and the work they do to help power the minds and futures of STEM students in our community,” said Patty Riddlebarger, Director, Corporate Social Responsibility, Entergy Corporation.
Throughout the four-day event on Tulane University’s campus, students will be able to participate in social media contests featuring trivia questions and Instagram photos/videos of their GNOSEF projects and experiences, making them eligible to win a variety of prizes.
“This annual gathering of curious students and dedicated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) teachers serves as an educational platform for creating a brighter future for everyone in our community,” said Annette Oertling, Ph.D., GNOSEF Fair Director. “As we have for the past 62 years, we are committed to ensuring that students continue to pursue STEM careers, and to promoting collaboration and interaction between area students, scientists and engineers.”
GNOSEF is presented by the Greater New Orleans Science Fair Inc., H. Britton Sanderford, the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, Entergy Corporation and Tulane University in partnership with Core Element, Loyola University, UNO, and Women for a Better Louisiana,
