NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Republican Ralph Abraham has won the runoff for the 5th District congressional seat in Louisiana, defeating Monroe's Democratic Mayor Jamie Mayo.
It's the northeast Louisiana seat that was lost last month by Republican Vance McAllister, who was caught up in scandal after a video showed him kissing a woman who was not his wife.
Abraham is a physician from rural Richland Parish. Mayo has been the mayor of Monroe for 13 years.
Mayo was the most prominent Democrat in last months' nine-candidate open race but he was a long-shot on Saturday. Republicans were divided in last month's election but were expected to unite behind Abraham going into the runoff.
